High above the Catalan countryside, nestled in the jagged peaks of Montserrat, lies a place where music, faith, and mountain air combine in perfect harmony. The Montserrat Monastery is more than just a spiritual retreat—it’s a living, breathing cultural treasure. And at the heart of it? The angelic voices of the Escolania de Montserrat boys’ choir.

The Journey Begins

I chose an stress-free day trip by car pickup from Barcelona, booking it conveniently through Viator. Our guide was engaging and informative, offering glimpses of Catalonia’s history as we ascended the winding roads. The drive alone, with sheer cliffs and lush valleys, was worth the journey.

First Impressions of the Monastery

The Benedictine monastery rises like a sanctuary out of stone, surrounded by surreal rock formations. It’s home to the Black Madonna, a revered statue that draws pilgrims from all over the world. The energy is both peaceful and profound—and as a lover of architecture and sacred spaces, I was immediately captivated.

The Angelic Soundtrack: Escolania de Montserrat

Then came the moment I was waiting for—the performance by the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe. Dating back to at least 1307, the choir has sung at this very monastery for centuries. Their voices soared through the stone basilica, ethereal and grounding all at once.

But what makes this choir truly special are the fascinating, lesser-known stories behind it:

  • A Tradition That Spans Centuries: With over 700 years of history, the Escolania is one of Europe’s longest continuously running choirs.
  • More Than Performers: They’re Residents: The boys live and study at the monastery during the school year, balancing academic studies with music training. It’s a full-time life of discipline, spirituality, and song.
  • Daily Rehearsals, Dual Instruments: Each chorister is trained not only vocally but also in playing two instruments—usually piano and violin or another orchestral instrument.
  • Global Talent, Local Roots: While most students come from Catalonia, the choir welcomes boys from across Spain and beyond, following a rigorous audition process.
  • They Rarely Tour: Unlike other choirs, the Escolania focuses primarily on daily liturgical services. Touring is infrequent, which makes hearing them at Montserrat a rare privilege.
  • Everyone Gets a Solo: Over their time in the choir, each boy is given solo opportunities at Mass—a beautiful tradition that emphasizes personal growth.
  • Exclusive Recordings: Many of their albums are available only at the Montserrat gift shop, making them a unique souvenir.
  • A Lifelong Connection: Some alumni return later in life as monks or teachers, keeping the musical tradition alive for future generations.

The performance I witnessed was brief—around 15 minutes—but the power of those harmonies stayed with me long after. There’s something almost mystical about hearing voices so pure echoing through such a sacred place.

Insider Tips for Fellow Travelers

  • Arrive Early: The basilica fills up quickly, especially before choir performances (typically at 1 PM on weekdays and Sundays). Aim to reach by late morning.
  • Ride the Funicular: Take the Sant Joan Funicular for incredible views and short hikes. The vistas are postcard-worthy.
  • Visit the Museum: The Montserrat Museum has works by Caravaggio, Dalí, and Picasso—yes, tucked away in a monastery!
  • Bring Cash: Small vendors near the monastery sell local cheese, honey, and fig cakes. Most don’t accept cards, and the goodies are delicious.

A Personal Reflection

Montserrat was not just a destination—it was a revelation. The mountains, the music, the scent of incense in the basilica—it all blended into an experience that touched both heart and spirit. I left lighter, humming a quiet chant under my breath, as if part of the place now lived inside me.
