Every July, the city of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, transforms into a spectacular celebration of Western heritage, cowboy culture, and community spirit. Known as ‘The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’, the Calgary Stampede Festival is more than just a rodeo – it’s a 10-day extravaganza that immerses visitors in the sights, sounds, tastes and traditions of the Wild West.
We had the good fortune of experiencing the Calgary Stampede a couple of years back, and even today, we vividly remember the electric atmosphere, the cowboy shows that kept us on the edge of our seats, the whirl of joyrides and the absolutely addictive ranch-style food. Where else can you bite into a giant fried onion and a juicy corn dog, all while watching bucking broncos and lasso-swinging cowboys perform in front of thousands?

📍 Where and When Does the Calgary Stampede Happen?
The Calgary Stampede takes place every year in early July at Stampede Park, located in the heart of Calgary, Alberta. We had the good fortune and timing to pair the festival visit with a couple of other experiences in Canada including the Columbian Icefields on a glacier from the ice age – highly recommend doing this, as Canada is vast and adding a couple of places can make it a delightful experience.
In 2025, the Calgary Stampede is scheduled to run from July 4 to July 13.

The Stampede Park is a massive 200-acre site in southeast Calgary, featuring the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome, rodeo arenas, exhibition halls, grandstands, midway rides, and countless food stalls. It’s easily accessible via public transport (Stampede Station on the C-Train) and walkable from downtown Calgary.
🐴 A Festival Steeped in History
The origins of the Calgary Stampede date back to 1912, when Guy Weadick, an American trick roper and vaudeville performer, envisioned a “Frontier Days” celebration to honor the fading cowboy way of life. He managed to raise $100,000 in sponsorship – an astronomical amount for the time – and launched the first Stampede with rodeo competitions and cowboy showmanship.
What started as a one-off event became an annual tradition by 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition. Since then, the Stampede has grown into one of Canada’s largest festivals, attracting over 1.2 million visitors each year.

The Midway is a Stampede staple – packed with gravity-defying rides, funhouses, Ferris wheels, and more. The classic Zipper, Mega Drop, and Tilt-a-Whirl are just the beginning. For younger visitors, there’s a dedicated Kiddie Midway, plus interactive farm exhibits, animal shows, and magic acts.
What we loved most was how the entire city seems to transform – from pancake breakfasts served by strangers on the street to line dancing in public squares. Calgary, for 10 days, becomes a cowboy town with a carnival soul.

If you’re a fan of the hit Netflix series Yellowstone, you’ll feel right at home at the Calgary Stampede. While Yellowstone dramatizes ranch life with high-stakes drama and rugged Montana landscapes, the Stampede is the real-world embodiment of that cowboy ethos.
Think of the Calgary Stampede as the live-action set of Yellowstone – with fewer family feuds and more funnel cakes. Both share a reverence for tradition, grit, land, and horses. But unlike Yellowstone’s fictional Dutton Ranch, Calgary’s event invites everyone into the cowboy circle – no branding iron required.
