Every July, the city of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, transforms into a spectacular celebration of Western heritage, cowboy culture, and community spirit. Known as ‘The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’, the Calgary Stampede Festival is more than just a rodeo – it’s a 10-day extravaganza that immerses visitors in the sights, sounds, tastes and traditions of the Wild West.
We had the good fortune of experiencing the Calgary Stampede a couple of years back, and even today, we vividly remember the electric atmosphere, the cowboy shows that kept us on the edge of our seats, the whirl of joyrides and the absolutely addictive ranch-style food. Where else can you bite into a giant fried onion and a juicy corn dog, all while watching bucking broncos and lasso-swinging cowboys perform in front of thousands?
In this article, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about the Calgary Stampede – from its rich history and annual schedule to the unforgettable experiences it offers, and why you need to go!
📍 Where and When Does the Calgary Stampede Happen?
The Calgary Stampede takes place every year in early July at Stampede Park, located in the heart of Calgary, Alberta. The festival typically kicks off on the first Friday of July and runs for 10 full days, concluding on the second Sunday of the month. We had the good fortune and timing to pair the festival visit with a couple of other experiences in Canada including the Columbian Icefields on a glacier from the ice age – highly recommend doing this, as Canada is vast and adding a couple of places can make it a delightful experience.
In 2025, the Calgary Stampede is scheduled to run from July 4 to July 13.

The Stampede Park is a massive 200-acre site in southeast Calgary, featuring the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome, rodeo arenas, exhibition halls, grandstands, midway rides, and countless food stalls. It’s easily accessible via public transport (Stampede Station on the C-Train) and walkable from downtown Calgary.
🐴 A Festival Steeped in History

The origins of the Calgary Stampede date back to 1912, when Guy Weadick, an American trick roper and vaudeville performer, envisioned a “Frontier Days” celebration to honor the fading cowboy way of life. He managed to raise $100,000 in sponsorship – an astronomical amount for the time – and launched the first Stampede with rodeo competitions and cowboy showmanship.
What started as a one-off event became an annual tradition by 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition. Since then, the Stampede has grown into one of Canada’s largest festivals, attracting over 1.2 million visitors each year.
The event has played a significant role in preserving and promoting Western heritage, Indigenous culture, and agricultural practices. Even today, the opening day features a parade led by Indigenous leaders on horseback, along with cowboy marching bands, floats, and mounted police in full regalia. was impossible not to feel moved.

🤠 Who Comes to the Calgary Stampede?
The Stampede draws a diverse crowd, but you’ll quickly notice that cowboy boots, denim, and wide-brimmed hats are practically the dress code.
Expect to see:
- Local ranchers and rodeo stars competing in world-class events
- City folk embracing their inner cowpoke for a week
- Families enjoying midway games and food
- Tourists from around the world soaking in the uniquely Canadian cowboy culture
Whether you’re an old hand at rodeos or a city slicker new to the Western way of life, the Calgary Stampede welcomes everyone with open arms and a big “Yeehaw!”
🐂 Events and Activities That Define the Stampede

The Calgary Stampede’s heartbeat is its daily rodeo competitions, which offer the largest purse in outdoor rodeo history. You can expect world-class cowboys and cowgirls competing in:
- Bareback and saddle bronc riding
- Bull riding
- Steer wrestling
- Barrel racing
- Tie-down roping
The evening Grandstand Show is another highlight – a combination of chuckwagon races, pyrotechnics, music, acrobatics, and fireworks. The sheer scale of the spectacle is breathtaking.
Other popular activities include:
Stampede Parade, which launches the festivities with marching bands, clowns, and over 150 floats.
Midway rides and carnival games that rival any amusement park.
Indigenous Village, showcasing traditional dances, storytelling, and tipi displays.
Agricultural exhibits with livestock shows, petting zoos, and farm-to-table demos.
Concerts featuring big-ticket country, pop, and rock artists.
🍔 Food Glorious Food: A Deep-Fried Dream
If you’re a fan of comfort food with a carnival twist, the Stampede’s food scene is legendary.
During our visit, we indulged in the colossal onion snack – a giant, deep-fried onion carved like a blooming flower. Crispy, golden, and perfect with a ranch dip, it was easily one of the most indulgent snacks we’d ever had.
Other iconic bites include:
- Classic corn dogs with a sweet cornbread coating
- Mini doughnuts, warm and dusted with cinnamon sugar
- Deep-fried everything — Oreos, pickles, mac & cheese
- Smoked turkey legs, BBQ ribs, pulled pork sandwiches
- Poutine with creative toppings like buffalo chicken or truffle oil
Vegetarian and vegan options have also become increasingly popular, with plant-based burgers and global cuisines now available on-site.
🎡 Joyrides and Family Fun

The Midway is a Stampede staple – packed with gravity-defying rides, funhouses, Ferris wheels, and more. The classic Zipper, Mega Drop, and Tilt-a-Whirl are just the beginning. For younger visitors, there’s a dedicated Kiddie Midway, plus interactive farm exhibits, animal shows, and magic acts.
What we loved most was how the entire city seems to transform – from pancake breakfasts served by strangers on the street to line dancing in public squares. Calgary, for 10 days, becomes a cowboy town with a carnival soul.
🎬 Calgary Stampede vs. Yellowstone: A Real-Life Western
If you’re a fan of the hit Netflix series Yellowstone, you’ll feel right at home at the Calgary Stampede. While Yellowstone dramatizes ranch life with high-stakes drama and rugged Montana landscapes, the Stampede is the real-world embodiment of that cowboy ethos.
Think of the Calgary Stampede as the live-action set of Yellowstone – with fewer family feuds and more funnel cakes. Both share a reverence for tradition, grit, land, and horses. But unlike Yellowstone’s fictional Dutton Ranch, Calgary’s event invites everyone into the cowboy circle – no branding iron required.
💡 Tips for First-Timers
- Dress the part: Embrace the cowboy gear – it’s fun and helps you blend in.
- Buy tickets early: Especially for the rodeo finals and Grandstand Shows.
- Try something new: From chuckwagon racing to deep-fried novelties, say yes to adventure.
- Use public transit: Parking is limited and traffic gets wild during Stampede week.
Final Word: A Must-See Slice of Canadiana

The Calgary Stampede is not just an event – it’s an experience. One that wraps you in the warmth of small-town hospitality, the thrill of cowboy sports, and the taste of unapologetically decadent food.
Whether you’re a cowboy at heart, a foodie looking for your next fried fix, or a traveler chasing unique cultural experiences, the Calgary Stampede is a once-in-a-lifetime festival that you’ll want to revisit again and again.
Just like we did – and will again.
